How to approach the topic?
There are many ways to introduce the topic of Health Insurance to the person you want to help. You can take advantage of the buzz around the current health care reform discussed in Washington DC to start the conversation. Moreover, you can mention the alarming numbers of the uninsured in America to fuel the conversation:
- 48 million uninsured in total (1 in six Americans)
- 45% female, 55% male
- 30% between the ages of 25-34, 20% between 35-44
- 20% of the uninsured (9 million) are children
- 40% are high school graduates
Challenges you may expect and how to face them.
After getting to the point and suggesting that the person you want to protect should get Health Insurance, you might face the following arguments:
Argument: I am in good health; I can go without Health Insurance for some time.
Answer: No one is safe without Health Insurance, no matter how healthy they are at the moment. Not having insurance means taking a risk with your health and your finances. If an accident were to occur and you didn’t have Health Insurance you would still be held accountable for the cost of the medical procedures.
Argument: Being in good health depends on me; I can protect myself.
Answer: Being uninsured escalates the risk of postponing care and skipping medical exams and increases the likelihood of an otherwise preventable health problem.
Argument: I have searched for the right health plan, but there is nothing I can afford.
Answer: There is a customized plan for everyone. Whether it is a private health plan or a public program, there is a suitable and affordable plan for every American.
Argument: I don’t have the knowledge to choose what is best for me. I’d rather go without insurance for a while, than spend more money on benefits I will not need.
Answer: It is essential for the uninsured to be informed about what they need, according to their Estimated Health Care Cost overtime and their Health Risk Assessment (HRA). By going to the bWell-informed website, they can learn about all the available health plans, take an HRA and estimate their health costs overtime, to ultimately choose the plan that perfectly fits their needs and budget.
